Oregano Oil Benefits
This winter, I found Wild Oregano Oil very effective against flu and sinus infection. And it is without the harmful side effects of prescription antibiotics. Yes, that herb you put in your pasta sauce! Oregano oil is derived from the leaves and flowers of oregano (Origanum vulgare).
I came down with a flu in December. It began with mild fever, runny nose and coughing. Every year I get a cold or flu and always end up with a sinus infection, which makes me cough for weeks from post nasal drip. Last year when it happened, I took Amoxicillin for 3-5 days and it went away. This year, my doctor again put me on 5 days of Amoxicillin but, strangely, my coughing did not stop this time. I was coughing well over 6 weeks. This time I must have caught a bug resistant to Penicillin family.
I was really frustrated. I tried everything including nasal rinse, tea tree oil and Eucalyptus oil but they did not work. One day, I came upon reading about Wild Oregano Oil and decided to give it a try. Surprisingly, it worked. I took 3-4 drops of oil twice a day for 3 days and my coughing stopped. The mucus that was yellow turned clear. Within 4-5 days, I was back to normal.
Oregano oil is an effective natural remedy for flu, cold, sinus infection, yeast infection and also shows benefits for weight loss and high cholesterol due to the compounds below.
Oregano oil contains two powerful compounds of carvacrol and thymol that have powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and also, contain Terpine and Rosmarinic acid.
Carvacrol, the key active compound, is found to be effective against various bacterial infections, such as Candida albicans, Staphylococcus, E. coli, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Aspergillus mold, Giardia, Pseudomonas, and Listeria.
This past December, Journal of Medicinal Food published a study that evaluated the antibacterial activity of oregano oil against 5 different types of bad bacteria. After evaluating the anti-bacterial characteristics of oil of oregano it showed significant anti-bacterial properties against all 5 species of harmful bacteria.
Interestingly, the highest activity was observed against E. Coli, which suggests that oregano oil should be routinely used to promote gastrointestinal health and to prevent deadly food poisoning.
In test-tube studies, oregano oil has been found to be effective against five different types of Candida, such as those that cause infections in the mouth and vagina. In fact, it was more effective than any other essential oil tested
Thymol — a natural fungicide with antiseptic properties. It helps boost your immune system, works as a shield against toxins, and even helps prevent tissue damage and encourages healing.
Terpenes — known for their powerful antibacterial properties.
Rosmarinic acid — an antioxidant that prevents free radical damage and has shown promise in treating allergic asthma and preventing cancer and atherosclerosis. It also works as a natural antihistamine that helps reduce fluid buildup and swelling caused by allergy attacks.
Nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, manganese, copper, boron, and niacin are also found in oregano oil.
Here are some scientific studies supporting its efficacy:
How to take Oregano oil for flu or sinus infection: Take 3-4 drops under your tongue before meal 3-4 times a day.
You can also take 600mg of Wild Oregano oil pills daily.
You should also do your own research as to which brand to use. I use the brands in the photo.
Also, remember to rest, hydrate and not drink alcohol when taking Oregano oil and trying to recover. Your immune system also has to be functional to overcome any kind of illness. Supplements help but do not cure. It is your body that has to heal with sufficient rest & sleep, eating right and staying warm in winter.
