SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED ABOUT MILK WITH ARTIFICIAL GROWTH HORMONE?

In the U.S., cows are allowed to be injected with genetically engineered growth hormone to increase milk production.

Artificial growth hormone is known as recombinant bovine somatotropin(rbST) and recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH).  They are basically man-made in a lab.

This drug was approved by FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) in 1993 when Monsanto Corporation(American agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation) applied for its use in dairy production and has been in use in this country since then.  Note that its use is banned in other countries such as Canada, Japan, Israel and the E.U.

Although FDA states that there is no significant difference between the milk from cows treated with rbST and the milk from non-rbST cows, there are some issues you might want to be aware of.

1.   Injection of rbST increases the risk of diseases in animals.  Canadian Veterinary Medial Association (CVMA) founds that the risk of clinical mastitis increased approximately 25% and the risk of lameness increased approximately 55%.

 2.   Cows with the above diseases can or have to be treated with antibiotics.

 3.   Toxicity – Although it is not clear whether rbST is dangerous to human health, there were studies that showed significant changes in toxicity in rats.
